This fascinating 18 mile long beach is one of the finest barrier beaches in the world and is formed completely by nature. The Chesil Beach protects the largest tidal lagoon in Britain, which is also home to the Abbotsbury Swannery. As you move along the beach you will discover that the pebbles are pea-sized at West Bay but large (like potatoes) at Portland. Local folklore says that smugglers could tell exactly where they were by the size of the pebbles. Discover more about this fascinating landform at the Chesil Beach Centre or just enjoy the views with a picnic at St Catherine’s Chapel, Abbotsbury.
